An innovative bamboo project, which could kick-start a new, multi-million rand industry incorporating this valuable and versatile crop, is being piloted in the Cacadu district.
The pilot – one of three such projects in the Eastern Cape – is being jointly driven by the IDC and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation to identify opportunities for rural economic development along the bamboo value chain.
According to IDC senior project manager, Bertie Strydom, bamboo represents sustainable opportunities in the Eastern Cape for poverty alleviation.

Graaff Reinet in the Cacadu district has been selected as one of six South African towns in which an innovative new economic development project is being test-driven.
The project is a joint initiative of the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut (AHI), the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Idasa, Cacadu District Municipality Rural Economic Development Initiative and Camdeboo Municipality and is being supported financially by the German Development Cooperation.
