Bathurst Street bus terminus given the go ahead

AB0NGILE MGAQELWA

MAKANA Municipality has allocated R2.5-milllon for the construction of a bus terminus and public toilets in Bathurst Street. The funds were sourced from the Cacadu Roads and Transport Department and Cacadu District Municipality. The terminus will be built in the place where buses currently arrive and depart, opposite Frontier Country Hotel. Makana spokesperson, Thandy Matebese said the municipality received a letter of approval from the Eastern Cape Provincial Heritage Resources Authority (ECPHRA).

He said the municipality had conducted public participation with regards to the construction of the bus terminus.

“A meeting was called in the Council Chamber last year and another one at BB Zondani Hall. A notice was also placed in Grocott’s Mail,” he said.

He said one of the main aims was to offer security to bus passengers, adding that the envisaged construction will also make provision of ablution facilities to the public as there are currently no public toilets in the CBD.

Matebese could not say when the municipality would start with the construction. However he said the permit from ECPHRA is valid for 12 months from the date of issue.
